Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 series at an event in early September, giving us an insight into the different models coming in 2022. There are four devices in this series, namely iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. There is no iPhone 14 mini this year.
With each new generation of iPhones, the question of which model an interested buyer should choose arises, so we’re going to show you the differences between the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
1. Price
Of course, prices vary between iPhone 14 phone models, we don’t need to tell you that. Fortunately, the prices in the US have not increased compared to last year, but may vary in other countries due to differences in currency translation.
2. Design
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus feature an aluminum body, dual cameras, notch, and five color designs, while the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max feature a stainless steel frame, three cameras, a dynamic island, and four colors
The iPhone 14 standard model has the same design as the iPhone 13, but retains a hole at the top of the screen. The iPhone 14 Plus looks the same as the standard model, but as we expected, it’s bigger than previous years. That means both sizes will once again come with dual cameras, flat edges and an aluminum frame, and will also offer water and dust resistance.
The iPhone 14 Pro phones look different from the standard version, though, and from any previous iPhone, as rumors have it that the well-known crack at the top of the front of the screen is replaced by what Apple calls a Dynamic Island, a capsule area at the top of the screen that’s split into two parts, one containing the front-facing camera and sensors for identifying known facial information, and the other containing information for animations and similar tools. Dynamic islands display different notifications and adapt to their functions.
For example: the dynamic island turns into a square when using Apple Pay, and expands when in a call, showing the call duration and sound waves when another app is opened during a call. Overall, it’s a major shift from the design language Apple has been using for years, and the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max look completely different when using the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max compared to previous Apple models.
The iPhone 14 Pro also has triple rear cameras, is heavier than the standard model, and has a shiny stainless steel frame instead of aluminum.
The phones also come in different colors. Buyers of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus can choose from midnight, astral, blue, purple and red, while the iPhone 14 Pro phones come in space black, gold, dark purple and silver.
Visually, there is no difference in size between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but in fact the 14 Pro version has a 6.1-inch screen diagonal, while the Pro Max phone has a 6.7-inch screen.
3. Display screen
Both the Pro and Pro Max models feature Apple OLED displays, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max having a resolution of 2796 x 1290 pixels, while the iPhone 14 Pro has a significantly lower resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels. While the resolution is lower, it has the same pixel density due to the smaller display.
Hence, both smartphones have a resolution of 460 ppi. This stands for “pixels per inch” and refers to the number of pixels per inch on the screen. Therefore, both iPhones display clear content.
4. Performance
Apple’s in-house mobile chipset series is one of the fastest on the market, and the chipset also features high power efficiency, fast computing speeds, AI computing without any cloud connection, and local data encryption.
If you own an iPhone 14 Pro and an iPhone 14 Pro Max, you won’t notice any difference in performance. Both devices are equipped with the new Bionic A16 chip. According to Apple, due to the higher memory bandwidth, the processor should be more energy efficient and perform better in multitasking and gaming.
Apple has delved into the graphics performance that video editing should now do better, plus the processor has new features like an always-on display that keeps specific widgets on permanently but saves power, extending battery life.
All new-generation iPhone models, as well as some older models, will also get iOS 16. The new smartphone operating system also brings some innovations. This update should also improve system stability and performance, which is already quite good.
5. Camera comparison
Apple stock is at the forefront of smartphones, so always trying to stay ahead in terms of capabilities and development, so with the new generation of iPhones, Apple has also revised the camera, the camera of the Pro phone jumped from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels, and finally only 12MP, but more pixels means higher resolution. This results in better recordings, especially in poor lighting conditions.
In addition to the aforementioned main cameras, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also offer a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens (three times optical zoom), which do not bring any paper improvements compared to the previous generation.
The front-facing selfie camera can now focus on multiple people at the same time, and with on-screen autofocus, group selfies can be taken in just a few simple steps.
6. Battery performance
In addition to performance and cameras, Apple has also made battery improvements, but not all models. The iPhone 14 now uses a 3,279 mAh battery. For comparison: the iPhone 13 has 3,227 mAh. The battery in the iPhone 14 Pro has a capacity of 3,200 mAh, which is also a step up from its predecessor. The Pro Max model takes a different path, with a 4,323 mAh battery. But how does raw data influence this practice?
Tests show that increased processor efficiency has a far greater impact on run time than pure battery capacity, to illustrate: testers streaming full HD video over WLAN created similar conditions, and with a screen brightness of 300 nits per square meter, the Pro Max had the longest playback time at 19:46 hours, followed by the iPhone 14 Plus at 19:22 hours, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro at 16:50 hours, and the standard version was the latest at 15:10 All four devices scored very well ratings, and is significantly better than its predecessors.
