Heating Oil Customers Outperform Natural Gas Consumers

Status: June 5, 2023 at 1:36 pm

Even though winters can be very mild at times, consumers have little reason to be happy. Natural gas and heating oil customers have never paid more for heating. Especially natural gas is very expensive.

The most expensive heating season on record is over. Consumers can look back to a relatively mild winter in 2022/2023, but this is not reflected in heating costs – on the contrary: heating oil and natural gas customers paid more than ever in the September-May period despite lower heating demand There are many times.

Despite gas price constraints: record gas costs

According to the comparison portal Check24, a model household heating a terraced house with natural gas pays an average of 2,534 euros in the current heating period from September 2022 to May 2023, including the gas price brake. Compared with the same period last year, the price premium was 12%.

Without the gas price brake, the cost of gas would have been 240 euros higher. The assumption of a 12-month discount for the current heating period is also taken into account when calculating the gas costs. For a model family, this amounts to a saving of 274 euros. According to Check24, consumers paid around 17% or €514 less for gas due to state support measures.

Gas customers pay more than heating oil consumer

Despite gas price caps and December discounts, gas customers are clearly at a disadvantage compared to heating oil consumers: gas costs are a full 15% higher than heating oil costs for the period September 2022 to May 2023 . From September to May, households using oil for heating had to pay 2,204 euros – 12% more than in the same period last year.

Check24 energy manager Steffen Suttner said gas was “very expensive” during this heating period. “However, now that wholesale prices have dropped significantly, alternative suppliers are responding by offering lower prices to new customers.”

You can save a lot of money by switching suppliers

This presents potential savings for consumers willing to switch. For example, in addition to the petrol price brake, households can save an average of 793 euros compared to basic services.

Natural gas is cheaper than it has been in the past two years.
